Rhodiola rosea
A closer look at the evidence for stress, fatigue, mental performance and exercise
Rhodiola rosea is a plant that has attracted considerable interest in the supplement and nootropics world.
You may also see it called roseroot, golden root or simply Rhodiola.
It is often described as an “adaptogen” and is marketed for energy, stress, concentration, and physical performance.
But marketing claims can make the evidence sound much stronger than it actually is.
So I want to take a more careful approach.
Rather than asking whether Rhodiola is simply “good” or “bad”, I think the better questions are:
What has actually been studied in humans?
What outcomes have researchers found?
How reliable are those findings?
And perhaps most importantly:
What don’t we know yet?
What Is Rhodiola rosea?
Rhodiola rosea is a flowering plant that grows naturally in cold and mountainous regions.
The roots and rhizomes are the parts most commonly used in preparations.
Researchers have identified several compounds in Rhodiola, including rosavins and salidroside, and have investigated their possible biological effects.
Rhodiola has a long history of traditional use, but traditional use and modern clinical evidence are not the same thing.
For Suppliwell, I want to focus on human research.
Why Is Rhodiola Called an “Adaptogen”?
You will often see Rhodiola described as an adaptogen.
The term is commonly used in supplement marketing to describe substances that are supposed to help the body respond to physical or psychological stress.
It sounds impressive.
But “adaptogen” isn’t a simple clinical diagnosis or a guarantee that a supplement will make someone more resilient to stress.
So I wouldn’t use the word as evidence that Rhodiola works.
I’d rather look at the actual trials.
Rhodiola and Mental Fatigue
This is one area where Rhodiola has been studied.
A systematic review examined randomized and controlled clinical trials investigating Rhodiola for physical and mental fatigue.
The review identified 11 studies.
Some studies reported beneficial results, but the reviewers found substantial methodological problems and concluded that the evidence was contradictory and that better-designed research was needed.
That’s important.
There is a signal worth investigating.
But there isn’t enough consistency for me to say:
“Rhodiola definitely reduces mental fatigue.”
A Study In People With Stress-Related Fatigue
One randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial investigated a standardized Rhodiola extract in 60 people with stress-related fatigue.
Participants received either Rhodiola extract or placebo for 28 days.
The researchers reported improvements in several measures, including burnout-related symptoms and some attention measures, compared with placebo. No serious side effects attributable to the extract were reported.
That’s encouraging.
But it was still a relatively small study.
And one clinical trial isn’t enough to establish a general treatment effect.
What About Stress?
There is also research specifically looking at stress and mood.
In one randomized study, 80 mildly anxious participants received either a Rhodiola extract or no-treatment control for 14 days.
The Rhodiola group reported improvements in several self-reported measures, including anxiety, stress, and mood.
However, the researchers found no relevant differences in cognitive performance between the groups.
I think this is a useful example of why we shouldn’t simply describe Rhodiola as a “cognitive enhancer.”
A study can find an effect on one outcome without finding an effect on another.
What About Concentration?
Some research has investigated Rhodiola during periods of fatigue or demanding work.
For example, an older double-blind crossover trial involving 56 healthy physicians working night duty reported improvements in several measures of mental performance during the Rhodiola treatment period.
Again, this is interesting.
But it doesn’t establish that Rhodiola will improve concentration in everyone under normal conditions.
The circumstances matter.
The extract matters.
The dose matters.
The population matters.
And the study quality matters.
Rhodiola and Exercise
Rhodiola has also been investigated as a possible aid for physical performance.
This is an area where the research has grown.
A 2025 systematic review and meta-analysis examined 26 randomized controlled trials involving 668 healthy participants and found statistically significant improvements in several endurance-related outcomes, including VOโmax and time-to-exhaustion measures.
However, the studies differed in their protocols, participants, doses and intervention periods.
A separate 2023 systematic review of 13 randomized controlled trials involving 263 participants also found mixed results and highlighted differences between supplementation and exercise protocols, as well as concerns about risk of bias in many studies.
So I would describe the exercise evidence as promising but not definitive.
Does Rhodiola Improve Memory?
This is where I would be particularly careful.
Studies investigate mental performance and cognition, but the evidence doesn’t establish Rhodiola as a proven memory enhancer.
Some trials have reported improvements in attention or mental performance under stressful or fatiguing conditions.
Other research has found no meaningful improvements in cognitive performance.
For example, the 2015 trial involving mildly anxious participants found improvements in several mood and stress measures but no relevant difference in cognitive performance.
So I wouldn’t market Rhodiola as a supplement that “boosts memory.”
That would go beyond the evidence.
What Does the Overall Evidence Say?
The evidence is more complicated than a simple yes or no.
A systematic review of randomized clinical trials found potential benefits for physical performance, mental performance, and certain mental-health-related outcomes, but also noted a lack of independent replication of individual studies.
A separate systematic review focused on fatigue concluded that the research was contradictory and that methodological limitations made it difficult to determine Rhodiola’s true effectiveness.
More recent reviews continue to describe potentially useful effects while highlighting small sample sizes, differences between preparations, and short intervention periods.
So my conclusion is:
There is genuine human evidence worth paying attention to, but important gaps remain.
What About Safety?
Short-term clinical studies have generally reported Rhodiola as reasonably well tolerated, with relatively few mild adverse events reported in the trials reviewed.
However, “generally well tolerated in clinical trials” does not mean it is appropriate for everyone.
A supplement can interact with medicines or be unsuitable for someone because of an existing health condition.
I would therefore be cautious about treating Rhodiola as automatically safe simply because it is a plant.
If you’re taking prescription medication, are pregnant or breastfeeding, or have a significant health condition, I’d recommend discussing Rhodiola with a qualified healthcare professional before using it.
One Important Point About Rhodiola Products
Not every Rhodiola supplement is necessarily equivalent.
Clinical studies can use particular extracts with specific characteristics.
For example, some of the research discussed above used standardized preparations such as SHR-5.
That means we shouldn’t assume:
“A study used Rhodiola” = “every Rhodiola product has the same evidence.”
That’s an important point when evaluating supplement marketing.

Some studies report improvements in mental performance, particularly under fatigue or stressful conditions, but results aren’t consistent enough for strong claims.

Several studies suggest possible benefits, but systematic reviews have identified methodological weaknesses and contradictory findings.

Some controlled research reports improvements in self-reported stress and mood, but the evidence base remains limited.

Recent systematic reviews suggest potential improvements in some endurance-related measures, although study quality and protocols vary.

Much of the clinical research has involved relatively short intervention periods.
My Suppliwell Takeaway
I think Rhodiola rosea is a genuinely interesting ingredient.
There is more human research behind it than you might assume from supplement advertisements.
At the same time, I don’t think the evidence justifies calling it a proven “brain booster.”
The most reasonable conclusion I can draw is:
Rhodiola shows promising but still uncertain evidence for reducing fatigue and supporting aspects of mental or physical performance, particularly under stressful or demanding conditions.
That’s a much more useful conclusion than simply saying “Rhodiola works.”
It tells us both what the research suggests and where the uncertainty remains.
Before You Try Rhodiola
If you’re considering Rhodiola, I’d start with a few simple questions:
- What am I hoping it will help with?
- Is there human evidence for that specific outcome?
- What type of Rhodiola extract am I considering?
- Is the product standardized?
- Am I taking any medication?
- Do I have an existing health condition?
- Can I discuss it with a healthcare professional if I’m unsure?
And I’d remember that no supplement should replace the foundations of good health.

The Suppliwell Bottom Line
Rhodiola rosea is a good example of why I believe supplement research needs nuance.
There are encouraging human trials.
There are systematic reviews.
There are plausible biological mechanisms.
But there are also small studies, different preparations, inconsistent outcomes, and limitations in study quality.
Promising doesn’t mean proven.
That’s the standard I want Suppliwell to apply to every ingredient we cover.
