Can an amino acid from tea help you feel calmer while staying focused?
L-theanine is a naturally occurring amino acid found primarily in tea leaves, particularly green and black tea.
It’s become popular in the nootropics world because it has an unusual reputation:
Relaxed, but not necessarily sleepy.
That’s an attractive idea.
Many people want to feel calmer without feeling mentally switched off.
And L-theanine has attracted research into exactly that area โ particularly attention, stress, relaxation and sleep.
There’s another reason it’s especially interesting for Suppliwell:
L-theanine and caffeine may work well together.
But, as always, there’s a difference between an interesting mechanism, a promising study and a proven effect.
Let’s look at the evidence.
What Is L-Theanine?
L-theanine is a naturally occurring non-protein amino acid.
It’s found naturally in tea, where it contributes to some of tea’s characteristic flavour and has been studied for possible effects on relaxation and cognition.
Unlike caffeine, L-theanine isn’t considered a conventional stimulant.
It doesn’t work by simply increasing alertness in the same way caffeine does.
Instead, research suggests that L-theanine may influence several neurological pathways and brain-wave patterns.
That has led researchers to investigate whether it can promote a state of relaxed attention.
Why Is L-Theanine Interesting as a Nootropic?
Because the goal isn’t necessarily to make the brain work harder.
It may be about making it work under better conditions.
Think about trying to concentrate while:
- You’re stressed
- You’re mentally tired
- You’re distracted
- You’ve had too much caffeine
- You’re feeling restless
In those situations, simply adding more stimulation isn’t necessarily the answer.
L-theanine has therefore attracted interest as a potential way of supporting calm attention.
But how strong is the evidence?
Does L-Theanine Improve Attention?
There is some encouraging evidence.
A systematic review and meta-analysis published in 2025 examined randomized controlled trials investigating L-theanine and cognitive outcomes.
The researchers found evidence suggesting potential benefits for certain aspects of attention and cognition, but also noted substantial variation between studies.

That’s an important distinction.
L-theanine may help under certain circumstances.
It isn’t necessarily a universal cognitive enhancer.
L-Theanine + Caffeine
This is probably the most interesting part of the L-theanine research.
Caffeine is a well-established stimulant.
L-theanine is associated more with relaxation.
Researchers have therefore investigated whether combining the two produces a useful balance:
Caffeine โ alertness
L-theanine โ relaxation
The combination has been studied particularly for attention and task performance.
A systematic review of randomized controlled trials found that the combination of L-theanine and caffeine may improve some measures of attention and alertness compared with placebo. (pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov)
That doesn’t mean the combination is a magic productivity formula.
But it is one of the more scientifically interesting combinations in the nootropics space.
Why Might the Combination Work?
Caffeine and L-theanine appear to have different effects.
Caffeine can increase:
- Alertness
- Wakefulness
- Attention
- Reaction speed
But it can also cause unwanted effects in some people:
- Jitters
- Nervousness
- Restlessness
- Increased heart rate
- Difficulty sleeping
L-theanine may produce a more relaxed mental state.
The theory is that combining them may allow someone to retain some of caffeine’s alerting effects while reducing some of the subjective tension associated with stimulation.
However, reducing caffeine-related side effects isn’t guaranteed.
Individual responses vary considerably.
Does L-Theanine Reduce Stress?
This is another promising area.
Several studies have investigated L-theanine in people exposed to psychological or cognitive stress.

This makes sense when we think about tea.
Tea contains both:
Caffeine + L-theanine
That combination may partly explain why tea can feel different from drinking an equivalent amount of caffeine alone.
But that’s a hypothesis rather than proof that L-theanine is solely responsible.
Tea contains many other compounds.
Does L-Theanine Make You Sleepy?
This is where L-theanine is particularly interesting.
The evidence doesn’t suggest that L-theanine acts like a conventional sedative.
Instead, research has investigated whether it can improve sleep quality and help people relax.
A 2024 systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized trials found evidence of improvements in some subjective and objective sleep measures, although the authors noted that more high-quality research is needed. (pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov)
So I’d describe L-theanine as:
Potentially calming rather than strongly sedating.
That’s an important distinction.
What About Sleep Quality?
A recent meta-analysis examined randomized controlled trials of L-theanine supplementation and sleep outcomes.
The researchers found improvements in several measures of sleep quality, including subjective sleep quality and certain objective sleep parameters.

This means L-theanine might be interesting for someone whose difficulty sleeping is partly related to mental tension.
But it shouldn’t be presented as a treatment for insomnia.
What About ADHD?
L-theanine has been investigated in children with ADHD, including studies examining sleep.
There is some preliminary research, but it is nowhere near enough to recommend L-theanine as a treatment for ADHD.
This is a good example of where we need to avoid turning a small clinical study into a broad health claim.
L-theanine is not an established treatment for ADHD.
What About Mood?
Some research has investigated L-theanine’s effects on mood and subjective wellbeing.
There are encouraging findings in certain studies, particularly around stress and relaxation.
But the evidence isn’t sufficient to describe L-theanine as a treatment for depression or anxiety disorders.
If someone is experiencing persistent anxiety, depression or another significant mental-health problem, a supplement shouldn’t replace appropriate professional care.
How Quickly Does L-Theanine Work?
This is different from ingredients such as Bacopa.
Some L-theanine studies examine effects following single doses, particularly in relation to attention, relaxation and stress.
That means it’s plausible that some effects can occur relatively quickly.
However, the exact timing depends on:
- Dose
- Individual response
- Whether caffeine is taken alongside it
- What outcome is being measured
So I’d avoid promising a precise “30-minute effect” or similar.
The research isn’t that simple.
What Dose Has Been Studied?
Human research has used a range of doses.
One commonly investigated range is around 100โ400 mg, depending on the study and outcome being measured.
The L-theanine + caffeine literature has frequently examined combinations containing approximately 100โ200 mg of L-theanine alongside caffeine. (pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov)
But this shouldn’t be interpreted as a universal recommended dose.
Different people respond differently, and product quality varies.
Is L-Theanine Safe?
L-theanine appears to be generally well tolerated in the doses used in human research.
However, “generally well tolerated” doesn’t mean completely risk-free.
Potential adverse effects can include:
- Headache
- Dizziness
- Gastrointestinal discomfort
- Changes in blood pressure
- Sleepiness in some people
Evidence regarding long-term high-dose supplementation remains more limited than evidence for short-term use.
What About Blood Pressure?
This is worth mentioning because L-theanine may influence blood pressure in some circumstances.
If someone is taking medication for blood pressure, or tends to have low blood pressure, it’s sensible to speak with a healthcare professional before using concentrated L-theanine supplements.
The same applies if you’re combining it with other ingredients that can affect blood pressure.
L-Theanine From Tea vs Supplements
There’s an important difference.
Tea naturally contains L-theanine, but the amount varies according to:
- Tea variety
- Growing conditions
- Processing
- Brewing method
- Serving size
A concentrated supplement provides a much more predictable amount.
That can be useful for research purposes.
But it also means you’re consuming considerably more L-theanine than you might obtain from a typical cup of tea.
So again:
Food and concentrated supplements aren’t automatically equivalent.
The Caffeine Question
Because L-theanine is so often combined with caffeine, it’s worth remembering that caffeine itself can be responsible for much of the perceived cognitive effect.
If someone says:
“L-theanine made me incredibly focused.”
and they took it with caffeine, we can’t necessarily attribute the whole effect to L-theanine.
The combination may be useful.
But the ingredients have different roles.
This is exactly why controlled trials matter.
What About Coffee?
Coffee naturally contains very little L-theanine compared with tea.
So if someone wants to investigate the combination, they’re generally looking at:
Supplemental L-theanine + caffeine
rather than simply drinking coffee.
Tea, meanwhile, naturally provides both caffeine and L-theanine, although quantities vary.

I think L-theanine is one of the more interesting “subtle” nootropics.
It’s not supposed to feel like a stimulant.
And that’s part of the appeal.
The most interesting evidence isn’t necessarily:
“L-theanine makes you smarter.”
It’s more nuanced:
L-theanine may help create a calmer state of attention, with the strongest evidence emerging when it is combined with caffeine.
That’s a much more defensible claim.
And there’s another lesson here.
Sometimes the goal of a nootropic isn’t to increase stimulation.
Sometimes the goal is to reduce the distractions that get in the way of thinking clearly.
Before You Try L-Theanine
I’d ask:
- Am I looking for relaxation, attention or sleep support?
- Am I taking caffeine at the same time?
- How much caffeine am I consuming overall?
- Do I take medication for blood pressure?
- Am I expecting an immediate effect?
- Am I using a concentrated supplement or simply drinking tea?
And remember:
Calmer doesn’t automatically mean more productive.
The goal is an appropriate balance between alertness and relaxation.

But I wouldn’t oversell it.
There’s no good reason to claim that L-theanine makes everyone more focused or dramatically improves cognitive ability.
The evidence supports a more measured conclusion:
L-theanine may support a calmer, more relaxed state and may improve aspects of attention, particularly when combined with caffeine, but more research is needed to establish its broader cognitive benefits.
